The VEL approach to the task-based learning of Chinese in a virtual world environment is the product of hands-on development and use over a period of 9 years at Monash University. Over 1500 introductory level Chinese undergraduate students have been participating in lessons on Monash University Chinese Island in Second Life since 2008.
